Sensory Services
The Martin County Library System’s new three-year strategic plan includes learning more about neurodivergent populations and developing sensory services.
The Martin County Library System, in partnership with KultureCity, provides sensory services for neurodivergent patrons or those who experience sensory needs and challenges. Staff and volunteers are educated and trained in assisting those who experience sensory overload, and the library offers resources for all to use when visiting the library. Select a library branch (below) for detailed information on the KultureCity website.
Sensory bags and sensory bins are available at all locations for use within the library as well as for two-week check-out; these contain items that help reduce or alleviate sensory stressors for patrons that experience sensory overload.
Sensory bags for in-house use include: noise-cancelling headphones, strobe-reduction glasses, sensory tools, VIPKC lanyard, and emotion thermometer/social cue cards. Weighted lap pads are also available. Visit your library's information desk to borrow a bag during your next visit.
Sensory bags for two-week checkout include: noise-cancelling headphones, sensory tools, communication cards, and a small weighted blanket. Place a hold for pickup at your preferred location.
Sensory bins are available in the quiet spaces and children's/teen areas of all locations, and offer various age-based items.
We thank the Friends of the Martin County Library System, Inc. for providing the funds for sensory bags and bins, and the neurodivergent staff that participated in creating these services.
