Curbside Collection

Martin County contracts with Waste Management for residential curbside garbage, recycling and yard waste collection. Residents who live in the unincorporated areas of Martin County have two (2) scheduled collection days for garbage. Your recycling day will also be on one of these two days. Residential vegetative yard waste for all customers is collected on Wednesday of each week.

Bulk waste is any item that is too large to fit into a regular garbage can due to size, shape or weight. Common household bulk items include: 

  • Appliances
  • Furniture
  • Mattresses
  • Other items too large to fit into your regular garbage can

DO NOT place the following materials or items in your garbage can or at the curb. If any of these items are found in your can or at the curb, they will be tagged with an instructional notice and not serviced.

Yes. The Martin County Solid Waste Transfer & Recycling Landfill Facility is a self-haul/self-unload drop off facility for recycling and trash disposal including vegetation, construction and demolition debris and tires. Residents and businesses can bring waste to the facility for disposal for a fee.

Observed Holidays

  • New Year’s Day

If an observed holiday falls on a weekday, curbside collection will occur the following day, and the one (1) day delay will occur for the remainder of the week. The normal schedule will then resume on Monday of the following week.

If a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, there will be no delays unless a holiday is observed on a Friday or Monday. If a holiday is observed on a Friday or Monday, the normal schedule will resume on Tuesday of the following week and there will be a one (1) day delay for the remainder of that week.

Holiday on a Monday: If your curbside pickup day is on a Monday, and one of the holidays listed above falls on a Monday, then your curbside pickup will be on Tuesday. Tuesday pickup will be on Wednesday, Wednesday on Thursday, Thursday on Friday and Friday on Saturday.

Holiday on a Tuesday: If your curbside pickup day is on a Tuesday, and one of the holidays listed above falls on a Tuesday, then your curbside pickup will be on Wednesday. Wednesday pickup will be on Thursday, Thursday on Friday and Friday on Saturday.

Holiday on a Wednesday: If your curbside pickup day is on a Wednesday, and one of the holidays listed above falls on a Wednesday, then your curbside pickup will be on Thursday. Thursday pickup will be on Friday and Friday on Saturday.

Holiday on a Thursday: If your curbside pickup day is on a Thursday, and one of the holidays listed above falls on a Thursday, then your curbside pickup will be on Friday. Friday pickup will be on Saturday.

Holiday on a Friday: If your curbside pickup day is on a Friday, and one of the holidays listed above falls on a Friday, then your curbside pickup will be on Saturday.

Holiday on a Saturday or Sunday: If the holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday there is no change to your collection schedule and the collection schedule will return to the regular pickup schedule the following Monday, unless a holiday is observed on a Friday or Monday. If a holiday is observed on a Friday or Monday, the normal schedule will resume on Tuesday of the following week and there will be a one (1) day delay for the remainder of the week.

Recycling

Martin County's single-stream recycling program allows you to mix all of your recyclables in one container. No more sorting! All residences are provided with a blue 64-gallon cart.

Proper cart usage

  • Place all of your recyclables INSIDE the cart.
  • DO NOT put recyclables in plastic bags!
  • All cardboard must be placed INSIDE the cart.
  • Have your cart out by 6 a.m. the day of your service.
  • The cart handle and wheels should be facing your house.
  • Make sure your cart is not blocked by objects such as a mailbox, trees or cars.
  • Please leave 3 feet of clearance around your cart so the robotic arm can grip the cart.

Your first replacement cart is free. Any additional carts will incur a $75 charge and $25 delivery fee.

If you do not want a recycling cart, you may schedule a removal by contacting Waste Management at (772) 546-7700.

NO Household Hazardous Waste: 

Please bring all residential hazardous waste to the Hazardous Waste Disposal Center for free disposal.

How to recycle or dispose of:

Tires may be brought to the Solid Waste Transfer & Recycling Facility for disposal for a fee.

  • Small tires: $4/each or $130/ton
  • Loader and truck tires: $30/each or $300/ton

Martin County also hosts several tire recycling amnesty days per year.

Used oil and gasoline from a Martin County residence can be brought to the Hazardous Waste Disposal Center for free disposal.

No business waste is accepted at the Hazardous Waste Disposal Center. 

No more than 100 pounds per vehicle.

Electronics and batteries can be brought to the Hazardous Waste Disposal Center for free disposal.

Plastic bags and small styrofoam items can be taken back to your local grocery store for recycling. Styrofoam and plastic bags should not be placed in your recycling cart. 

For disposal of prescriptions and other medications, contact the Martin County Sheriff's Office at (772) 220-7000 or your local pharmacy.

Construction or demolition debris may by disposed of at the Solid Waste Transfer & Recycling Facility.

Yard Waste

Routine vegetative yard waste for residents is collected on WEDNESDAY of each week. 

Up to 10 cubic yards of yard waste can be place curbside for collection each week. After tagging or scheduling, Waste Management has five (5) business days to collect this yard waste. 

Routine yard waste includes debris from routine residential yard maintenance only. It does NOT include yard waste from common areas, preserve areas, HOA maintenance, and/or land or lot clearing. This debris must be disposed of by the contractor, home/property owner or association.

Guidelines:

  • Must be less than 5 inches in diameter, less than 6 feet in length and weigh less than 50 pounds per item. 
  • Place within 6 feet of the curb.
  • Stack neatly in a pile, free of any other waste.
  • Do not use plastic bags for yard waste.
    • Use paper bags, cardboard boxes or garbage cans.
  • Do not place in storm swales, in front of culverts or in drainage areas. 
  • Do not place under utility lines or low-hanging tree branches.

Routine yard waste includes any vegetative matter resulting from residential property lawn and landscaping maintenance. Routine yard waste for curbside collection must be less than 5 inches in diameter, less than 6 feet in length and weigh less than 50 pounds per item. 

Routine yard waste includes:

  • Branches
  • Grass clippings
  • Leaves
  • Live holiday trees
  • Pinecones
  • Palm fronds

  • Shrub and tree trimmings

  • Weeds

Material placed curbside that does not meet the county guidelines of routine yard trash will be tagged with a non-collection notice, which serves to inform the resident that the material is non-conforming debris and therefore cannot be collected. If a material is non-conforming, then disposal is the responsibility of the resident.

Routine yard waste does not include:

  • Whole trees, tree trunks
  • Stumps, logs
  • Root systems
  • Land clearing debris (e.g. rocks, dirt)
  • Items that are more than 5 inches in diameter, more than 6 feet in length and weigh more than 50 pounds per item

Bulk Yard Waste

If your yard waste is not collected by Waste Management’s truck on Wednesday due to the large amount placed curbside for collection, a tag will be placed on the pile indicating that it has been scheduled for collection by the clamshell truck (grapple truck with claw).

This waste will be collected within five (5) business days of tagging or scheduling. Waste Management will collect up to 10 cubic yards of vegetative yard waste per week from a residents home after being tagged or scheduled for collection.

Bulk yard waste pickup does not require scheduling, although it is recommended that you call Waste Management to schedule a bulk yard waste pickup so it is placed on the collection schedule the day that you call. To schedule a pickup, or if you have bulk yard waste that may require the grapple truck with claw, please call (772) 546-7700.
