Curbside Collection

Martin County contracts with Waste Management for residential curbside collection of garbage, recycling, and yard waste. Residents living in the unincorporated areas of Martin County receive service on two scheduled days each week for garbage pickup; recycling is collected on one of those same days. Yard waste is collected weekly on Wednesdays for all residential customers.

Bulk waste is any item that is too large to fit into a regular garbage can due to size, shape or weight. Common household bulk items include: 

  • Appliances
  • Furniture
  • Mattresses
  • Other items too large to fit into your regular garbage can

The following items must not be placed in your garbage can or at the curb:

  • Vehicles (cars, boats, etc.)
  • Automobile parts, engines
  • Hazardous materials (asbestos, chemicals, etc.)
  • Explosives (e.g., oxygen tanks, propane tanks, welding tanks)
  • Biomedical waste (sharps, syringes, needles)
  • Household hazardous waste (e.g., batteries, oil, solvents)
  • Products labeled: Toxic, Poison, Corrosive, Flammable, Irritant

Items that fall into these categories will be tagged with an instructional notice and will not be collected.

Residents can bring waste to the Martin County Solid Waste Transfer & Recycling Landfill Facility. The facility operates on a self-haul/self-unload basis, and there is a fee for disposal.

Accepted types of waste include:

  • General trash
  • Vegetative yard waste
  • Construction and demolition debris
  • Tires

How Holidays Affect Your Pickup Schedule:

If an observed holiday falls on a weekday, collection will occur the following day. All remaining collections that week will be delayed by one day. The normal schedule will then resume on Monday of the following week.

If a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, there will be no delays unless a holiday is observed on a Friday or Monday. In this case, the normal schedule will resume on Tuesday of the following week and there will be a one (1) day delay for the remainder of that week.

Recycling

Martin County's single-stream recycling program allows you to mix all of your recyclables in one container. No more sorting! All residences are provided with a blue 64-gallon cart.

Proper cart usage

  • Place all recyclables inside the cart.
  • Do not put recyclables in plastic bags!
  • Flatten and place cardboard inside the cart.
  • Set the cart out by 6 a.m. on your service day.
  • Position the cart with the handle and wheels facing your house.
  • Leave 3 feet of clearance on all sides.

Your first replacement cart is free. Any additional carts will incur a $75 charge and $25 delivery fee.

If you do not want a recycling cart, you can schedule a removal by contacting Waste Management at (772) 546-7700.

What can I recycle?

These items can be placed in your recycling cart:

  • Metal cans
    • Aluminum
    • Steel
    • Tin
  • Cardboard
    • Flattened or corrugated/cardboard

These items cannot be placed in your recycling cart:

  • Prohibited: No broken glass
  • Prohibited: No ceramics
  • Prohibited: No clothing, fabrics
  • Prohibited: No grease or food-contaminated containers (e.g. pizza boxes)
  • Prohibited: No paper towels, napkins
  • Prohibited: No plastic bags, hangers or toys
  • Prohibited: No propane tanks
  • Prohibited: No tires, rubber
  • Prohibited: No styrofoam
  • Prohibited: No waxed cardboard
  • Prohibited: No wood

NO Household Hazardous Waste:

  • Hazardous item: No aerosol cans
  • Hazardous item: No batteries
  • Hazardous item: No cleaners
  • Hazardous item: No electronics
  • Hazardous item: No fluorescent light bulbs
  • Hazardous item: No paint cans

Please bring all residential hazardous waste to the Hazardous Waste Disposal Center for free disposal.

How to dispose of ...

Tires may be brought to the Solid Waste Transfer & Recycling Facility for disposal for a fee.

  • Small tires: $4/each or $130/ton
  • Loader and truck tires: $30/each or $300/ton

Martin County also hosts several tire recycling amnesty days per year.

Used oil and gasoline from a Martin County residence can be brought to the Hazardous Waste Disposal Center for free disposal.

No business waste is accepted at the Hazardous Waste Disposal Center. 

No more than 100 pounds per vehicle.

Electronics and batteries can be brought to the Hazardous Waste Disposal Center for free disposal.

Additionally, many businesses throughout Martin County will also accept electronics and batteries for recycling for free. Please contact the stores directly to confirm what items that they are accepting.

Plastic bags and small styrofoam items can be taken back to your local grocery store for recycling. Styrofoam and plastic bags should not be placed in your recycling cart. 

For disposal of prescriptions and other medications, contact the Martin County Sheriff's Office at (772) 220-7000 or your local pharmacy.

Construction or demolition debris may by disposed of at the Solid Waste Transfer & Recycling Facility.

Yard Waste

Routine Yard Waste

  • Collected every Wednesday for residents.
  • Up to 10 cubic yards can be placed curbside each week.
  • After tagging or scheduling, Waste Management will collect within 5 business days.

Collection Guidelines:

  • Items must be under 5 inches in diameter, less than 6 feet in length, and under 50 lbs.
  • Stack neatly, within 6 feet of the curb.
  • No plastic bags – use paper bags, cardboard boxes, or garbage cans.
  • Do not block storm swales, drainage areas, or place near utility lines.

Routine residential yard maintenance waste only. (Yard waste from common areas, preserve areas, HOA maintenance, or land/lot clearing is not accepted. This debris must be disposed of by the contractor, home/property owner, or association.)

Routine yard waste includes:

  • Branches
  • Grass clippings
  • Leaves
  • Weeds
  • Pinecones
  • Palm fronds
  • Shrub and tree trimmings
  • Live holiday trees

Material placed curbside that does not meet the county guidelines of routine yard waste will be tagged with a non-collection notice, which serves to inform the resident that the material is non-conforming debris and therefore cannot be collected. If a material is non-conforming, then disposal is the responsibility of the resident.

Non-conforming debris includes:

  • Whole trees or trunks
  • Stumps or logs
  • Root systems
  • Land clearing debris (rocks, dirt, etc.)
  • Any item over 5" in diameter, 6' in length, or 50 lbs

Bulk Yard Waste

If your yard waste pile is too large for regular Wednesday pickup:

  • It will be tagged and scheduled for a grapple truck (clamshell) within 5 business days.
  • Waste Management will still collect up to 10 cubic yards per week from a resident's home after being tagged or scheduled for collection.

Scheduling a Bulk Yard Waste Pickup:

  • Not required, but recommended.
  • Call Waste Management at (772) 546-7700 to ensure your bulk yard waste is added to the collection schedule.
