Senior Programs

Martin County Parks and Recreation provides recreational programming for seniors ages 50 and over Monday through Friday at the Log Cabin Senior Center, located at 2369 NE Dixie Highway in Jensen Beach.

Activities include a variety of free classes such as fitness, life skills, bridge, art, yoga and more! View the program descriptions below.

Stay Active

October 2 - November 20, 2023: Adults 50 and older can attend FREE Tai Chi for Arthritis sessions at the Log Cabin Senior Center starting on April 25 and continuing through June 22. Tai Chi has been shown to improve flexibility, balance, muscle strength, pain relief, and more! Join Carol and Betsy, our certified instructors, on Mondays from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Walk-ins welcome!

This FREE program was made possible through the Supporting Healthy Aging Through Parks and Recreation (SHAPR) Grant, a grant from National Recreation and Park Association with funding from the Centers For Disease Control (CDC).

This 60-minute strength training chair class will begin with a light cardio warmup, followed by weight bearing exercises for the entire body, and will conclude with stretching. Bring water and sneakers.

This 45-minute class uses weights and your own body weight to target all of the major muscle groups. Bring water and sneakers.

Join Carol in this 45-minute resistance band chair class to help with muscle loss, bone strength, mobility, fall prevention, and self-esteem. Bring a bottle of water.

Join Carol for this 45-minute class to strengthen your muscles, improve your mobility, balance, and flexibility while reducing the strain on muscles, joints, and bones. Bring a bottle of water.

Spark Creativity

Every Tuesday of the Month! Come explore your creative side and share your ideas with new and old friends during this impromptu session. Whether you are a beginner or simply want to practice painting, drawing, or sketching with others, this is the place to be. No supplies are provided.

September 20: Snap, crackle, pop!! Come and make your own popcorn using corn on the cob. (Call to reserve your seat)

September 25: Enjoy a pre-planned canvas painting class. Experience the joys of painting, even if you don’t consider yourself an artist. Supplies provided. Call to reserve your seat.

Fun & Games

Whether you want to play, learn, or just have fun come to the Log Cabin Monday - Friday from 2:00-4:00 p.m. to play Scrabble, JENGA, Chess, Checkers, Dominos or form Bridge, Mahjong, Pinochle, Poker, Euchre, Hand & Foot, Canasta Groups. All card games welcome.

September 6, 13, 20 & 27: Come and join in this ultimate trick taking card game. A social enjoyment you can have with a pack of cards.

Have FUN and enjoy an hour of BINGO to win prizes! Bingo cards provided.

September 5, 12, 19 & 26:  Join in this game played with dominoes. The object of the game is for a player to play all the tiles from his or her hand onto one or more chains, or trains, from a central hub or "station".

Based on the highly popular TV game show, participants are presented with clues in the form of answers and they must identify the person, place, thing, or idea that the clue describes. Test your knowledge, learn and have fun! No prior experience. Played single or in teams.

Bring your favorite crossword puzzle to the next level with Giant Crossword!

Players use the Wii Remote to mimic real-life bowling actions on the television screen. Play solo or in groups.

Mahjong, a traditional Chinese tile-based game of strategy and skill, is enjoyable and hugely popular. Bring your Mahjong card and tiles. Beginners are welcome.

Take part in the fun by playing this well-known trick-taking card game.

Join in on this fun game that incorporates math, strategy, interaction with others, and problem-solving. Bring your cribbage board.

Socialize & Network

September 11: This month, each of us will bring a favorite book to share with the group. Pick up the book that we will be reading in October as well. Call to reserve a seat.

 

Know & Learn

September 6: Amy Heimberger Lopez, Martin County Emergency Management Coordinator, will present The Road to Readiness, an all-hazards guide to being prepared before, during, and after an emergency.  Call to reserve your seat. 

September 13: Please join Aerielle Burnett, Nutrition Educator for a discussion about proper nutrition and making health choices when it comes to your daily diet.

September 15: Participants will compare and analyze nutrition facts labels to determine the healthier choice. Call to reserve a seat.     

September 20: Please join Mia Cruz, Volunteers in Medicine for a discussion about their program and how they can help individuals who are having difficulties connecting to needed healthcare.

September 27: Hear from a Medicare expert about options for healthcare. Explore potential benefits that you may be entitled to
through Medicare. Ice cream social.
