TO: Larry Massing, Building Official DATE: January 8, 2019 VIA: Don Donaldson, Deputy County Administrator FROM: George M. Stokus, Assistant County Administrator SUBJECT: Permitting Process for Potential Historic Properties This memo is meant to memorialize the permit process for flagged properties with potential historical value. In 1997 Historic Property Associates, Inc. conducted a historical architectural survey for Martin County. The survey provided a list of over 1,000 Martin County properties that may have historical significance based on the evaluation criteria used. These properties are flagged for review when a building permit application is received for the structure. The Building Department has assigned staff to review permits for flagged properties. Upon receipt of a permit application, staff will contact the property owner to let them know their property may be eligible for historic designation. If the owner is interested, he/she can begin the designation process. If not, the permit application will be processed using normal procedure. At the time of discussion, if the property owner is not interested in historic designation, the flag may be removed.
