MARTIN COUNTY HISTORIC PRESERVATION BOARD Via email January 14, 2019 Honorable Representative MaryLynn Magar Florida House of Representatives 214 House Office Building Tallahassee, FL 32399-1300 Re: Strong Support for Legislative Funding of the Division of Historical Resources Grant Program for Improvements to the Old Martin County Courthouse Dear Representative Magar: In September 2018, Martin County’s application to the Florida Division of Historical Resources Special Category Grant program for repairs to the Old Courthouse was reviewed and ranked eight out of seventy-four with a total score of 90 points. The ranked list of applicants has been submitted to the Governor and State Legislature for funding. I write on behalf of the Martin County Historic Preservation Board asking you to fund this program during your budgeting process. We strongly support Martin County’s efforts to improve the Old Martin County Courthouse. The structure was erected in 1937 and served as Martin County’s first official courthouse. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1997. This program funding is critical to repair the historic building and prevent further disrepair. The Historic Preservation Board was created by ordinance in 2003 as part of Martin County’s Historic Preservation Ordinance. The mission of the Historic Preservation Board is to advance the local designation of the County’s historic structures and landmarks to raise awareness of the importance of the County’s architectural and archaeological legacy to community identity and the preservation of Martin County’s unique past. Our duties include designating structures more than 50 years old to the Martin County Local Register of Historic Landmarks. The Old Martin County Court House, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997, was designated to the local historic register by our Board on March 15, 2006. 1 of 2 Honorable Representative MaryLynn Magar January 14, 2019 Page 2. We appreciate the opportunity to support Martin County and stand ready to help make the community a better place with the preservation of the Old Martin County Courthouse. Please support funding of this Division of Historical Resources program. Thank you for your consideration.
