CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 4:00 pm. 2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES * Teena moved to approve the minutes of January 16, 2019 as presented. * Genie seconded the motion, **and it was carried unanimously. 3. PUBLIC COMMENT - None 4. REPORTS A. Friends of the MCLS, Inc. – Sheila Leach, President Sheila reported that:  The Book Depot has been very busy this season. High sales on the weekends.  Installed new printer for their office.  Two more events will be held for memberships, offering free ticketed popular events for new members.  Need more volunteers for the Book Depot. 5. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Reporting of Trustees’ Volunteer Hours Joy – Absent Carolyn – 4 Teena – 0 Janelle – Absent Genie – 1.5 B. Work Plan Updated plan in Trustees package. C. Advocacy Genie shared that her daughter is using Lynda.com to take a refresher on auto cad. She was impressed with the site but said that it was difficult to find. She suggested a little more orientation from staff when people sign up for their library card. Jenn shared that Joy attended the mid-winter American Library Association (ALA) Conference and a conference in Ontario. Joy brought back a package of information that she shared with us along with her Board/Committee Name date Page 2 of 3 very complete notes. Jenn will share and review the materials with managers and select what we could implement for our Library. 6. NEW BUSINESS A. Populations at Risk – Ann Schreffler, Branch Manager Ann gave the definition of “populations at risk”: Any age, gender, background and origin of the person who may be dealing with homelessness, and/or suffer mental or physical illnesses, poverty or hardships. What we do to help:  Provide a free welcoming, safe place, a refuge where they are treated with compassion.  Trained staff through 6-part educational video series developed by the California State Library System, on what to do and say or not do and say.  Ryan Dowd weekly tips – help on how to deal with homeless and mental health patrons’ situations.  Dare to Care – training to empathize with our patrons in need.  Partner with other community agencies that provide services for that population. o Hearing Impaired Services. o American Sewing Guild. o House of Hope provides food for the needy. o Care Bag – mobile showers and care bag with toiletries. o Volunteers in Medicine for healthcare. o Whole Child – connecting families with available services in the community. o Martin County Health & Human Services for homeless prevention grants and other social services. o 211 – Information and referral services. o Lahia – Love and Hope in Action - provide meals, showers and haircuts, laundry facilities, all in exchange for some work at their premises, and mitigate serious health and safety risks for adults and families who are homeless and/or indigent. o Boys Town – helping families at risk with intervention before they get separated or homeless. o Mosquito control – information for people who live in the woods. MCLS provides:  Staff that treats everyone with dignity, respect, equality and fairness.  Library cards to allow patrons to have take-home tech that runs on batteries.  Bus schedules for the Marty Bus.  Employment assistance.  An air-conditioned, safe place from the weather.  Food for Fines to assist House of Hope food banks that provide for homeless and others in need.  Programs and classes for the elderly: Tai Chi Balance and Movement, movies for the hearing impaired, literacy classes, and classes on technology (smartphones, readers, tablets, etc.).  Staff raises awareness to the public that our at-risk population has as much right to be in the library as anyone else. 7. DIRECTOR’S REPORT – Jennifer Salas, Library Director Jenn reported that:  We were approached by Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Career Source for a School-to-Work program: o Targeting teens and young adult to prepare them for the workforce. If awarded the grant, the program will be provided by the Hoke Library. o Camila Rodriguez, our Teen Library Specialist, will be working with them to develop a curriculum. o Will start program in the fall and will lead up to an internship. Will partner with Marty Bus to provide transportation where needed. o Will incorporate idea lab equipment for training, interview skills, resume building, and some soft skills. o Career Source program will be 2 weeks in July, for 16 to 21 year olds.  Looking into potential grant from the Loblolly Community for summer reading.  Richard and Jenn taking over the oversight of the youth and adult services teams that were supervised by Sylvie. This will free Sylvie to work with Public Services staff and managers.  Will meet with a consultant to start working on the new long range services plan which will start on 2020.  Active shooter program was provided to staff by John Kozey, Building Operations Administrator in charge of security, Sheriff’s Department staff, and Emergency Services staff to provide training, bring awareness and clarify our role as Library staff in an active shooter situation.
