CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 4:05 pm. 2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES * Janelle moved to approve the minutes of August 15, 2018 as presented. * Genie seconded the motion, **and it was carried unanimously. 3. PUBLIC COMMENT - None 4. REPORTS A. Friends of the MCLS, Inc. – Sheila Leach, President  Had first meeting after summer break on 9/18/2018.  Approved 2019 Friends budget which includes the previously approved Library funding request.  Will have meetings every other month and will add more as needed.  Created t-shirts for volunteers to wear at the Book Depot. 5. Work Plan Jenn requested that Trustees bring topics for the 2019 work plan.  October 2018 - Law Library  January 2019 – BookMania!  July 2019 – Hoke idea lab Board/Committee Name date Page 2 of 3 Jenn asked Trustees if they agreed to cancel November meeting since it will fall a couple of days before the Thanksgiving holiday. All agreed. C. Advocacy 6. NEW BUSINESS A. Outreach Services – Darlene Encomio, Literacy, Education and Outreach Manager Darlene introduced herself and her staff and gave a brief summary of the Outreach Program, which consists of going to school and community events to offer Library information and library card signup, showing some of the technology and other services the Library offers for the community,  Geri Parilla, Family Literacy Outreach Coordinator, gave a brief summary of her job. School visits, partnerships with community agencies like the City of Stuart Police Department Back to School event to bring school supplies where needed. Participate in school events to offer library cards to students, and promote all the Library services that people don’t know about like STEAM kits and Story Express kits, both very popular with teachers and parents. The Story Express kits have been so successful that we are adding 38 more kits. We also offer library tours and homework help.  Geri showed the contents of the Story Express kit she brought to demonstrate, explaining that each kit has a theme with books, puppets, toys, music CD’s and other props to help the parent or teacher read and tell the story.  Geri also heads the Seasons Readings program where books donated by patrons are given to children in schools and daycare centers as presents.  Runs the STEAM program once a week during the summer, and book clubs based on Sunshine State reading program books which kids are required to read for school.  Will have an event at SeaWind Elementary School Literacy Night in Hobe Sound on October 4, 2018. Trustees were invited to attend or volunteer at the Library table.  Becky Scheelk, Homework Helper Coordinator matches volunteers with children who need homework help, and books the appointments for all the branches.  The Library is the only source for free homework help in town, other than schools or paid clubs like the Boys and Girls Club.  Offers free ACT prep sessions from January to April, 2019 which is very popular.  Starting a Python coding for robotics class soon that will be facilitated by a high school student volunteer.  Jenn stated that this big job is done by two part time staff, 20 hours per week each. 7. DIRECTOR’S REPORT – Jenn Salas, Library Director Jenn reported that:  Shared info at the Friends meeting about Staff Day. o Jay Turner was the featured speaker and he gave a fantastic presentation. o 96% of staff rated Staff Day very good or excellent. o This year’s special craft project was a “light picture” created with a digital camera. We had staff tracing a letter per person which when put together said “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much” a quote by Helen Keller.  George Seaman has had great success with the flight simulator program. He was requested to bring the flight simulator and do a demo for the Leading Edge Libraries Conference held at Disney on September 19 through 21 in Orlando.  Summer Reading success was due to having the teachers participate electronically to submit their reports.  Reception at Cummings for the quiet reading area opening will be announced soon.  Hoke idea lab will be completed in FY 2019, exact date to come. It will focus on the arts. Will feature Botsy which is art design software. Patrons can enter a design on the computer and it will create a mural. Art will be able to be traced on cardboard, wood and other materials. Will have two Botsys at the Hoke. One for checkout and the other will stay in house. 8. She suggested that the Volunteer Manager be there to assist students in entering their volunteers’ hours into the school’s tracking system. 9.
